Making decisions on nuclear energy: British ways

Journal Article · · Mater. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6431314
Energy supply in Great Britain is currently less critical than for many other countries; but over a period of a year, Great Britain will have possibly made three important decisions with regard to nuclear energy. The first was a decision to proceed with production of two more advanced gas reactor power stations for the late 1980s rather than switch to another type. The House of Commons has voted overwhelmingly to support the establishment of a thermal oxide reprocessing plant (THORP) at Windscale. The third decision lies ahead; its substance is whether the British should proceed with the development of a commercial fast breeder reactor or not. The substance of all the decisions are reviewed in this article along with the paths that have been followed in reaching them. (MCW)
