Neutronic studies of the long life core concept: Part 3, Preliminary metal fueled core optimization for the Large Scale Prototype Breeder
A design envelope for LSPB size metal fueled cores is developed with respect to minimizing the fissile inventory and achieving a zero or positive reactivity swing over a burn cycle. Consideration is given to assembly design, choice of core configuration, fuel management scheme, and the attendant neutronic performance. It is therefore recommended that further optimization of LSPB sized metal LMRs center on cores with a heterogeneous configuration of fuel assemblies, fuel pin diameters of approx.0.30 in., a core height of 3 ft, and fuel management based on annual batch refueling.
