Programmable controllers used to monitor gas pipeline compressor stations

Because of the unique capabilities offered by modern programmable controllers - sophisticated analog control schemes, quick and easy logic and input/output reconfiguration, data-logging, and alarm annunciation - PGT has interfaced remote terminal units in a multidrop microwave communication network with Gould's Modicron 584 programmable controllers at six compressor stations along its 600-mile pipeline. The system is supervised from headquarters in Spokane, Washington. This control scheme allows monitoring the stations status and alarms, specifying setpoints, initiating turbine-compressor auto-start/stop sequences, and remotely adjusting turbine speed at an unattended station. PGT's experience has shown that such control systems can creatively and economically solve many types of problems.
