The construction of Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority's $2.1 billion rail system is examined. Design is under way at 24 stations and 21.8 mi of lines. It is estimated that by the year 2000, the system will carry approximately 750,000 passengers daily. Three aspects of the new system are of special interest to transportation planners: a description of the new system and how it will differ from San Francisco's BART and Washington, D.C.,'s Metro systems; the anticipated impact of the new transit system on traffic patterns and the city's urban structure; and the problems that transportation engineers will face in coping with construction detours. The physical properties and dimensions of the individually powered railroad cars are described. The communications system and the computer monitoring of train movement are surveyed. Time and cost savings, reduction in bus services, and reduction in automobile accidents attributed to the rail system are estimated. Other planning elements of the new transit system are considered.
