Canadian gas firms pushing to up exports to U. S

Canadian gas companies would like to export surplus natural gas supplies from Western Canada to the U.S., a move that would directly benefit Northern Tier States of the Midwest. At stake are proposed changes in a Canadian policy that requires a 25-year reserve before exports and whether it is decided to convert Eastern Canada from imported oil to Western gas. The companies prefer exporting the gas to the U.S., where it will bring higher prices than if it is shipped east and where they hope to retain their markets. They prefer a quick marketing strategy that will maintain exploration and production. The surplus could also be put in underground storage. U.S. consumers will be affected as early as 1979 by the Canadian Energy Board's decisions.
