The effect of the electron momentum distribution on the energy dependence of the ionization cross sections and the ratios of these cross sections, for the 2s and 2p electrons in an atomic L shell, is analyzed in the binary-collisions approximation. The electron states in the target atoms are described by the Slater and Roothaan--Hartree--Fock momentum wave functions and hydrogenic wave functions. The use of the real wave functions in the calculation of the ratio of ionization cross sections in the binary-collision approximation improves the agreement with experiment. The behavior of the ratio of ionization cross sections is explained by certain features of the electron momentum distribution.
