User plight: which motor most efficient

The market for energy-efficient motors is expanding, but potential users have difficulty selecting appropriate motors and deciding where to use them and what to expect in the way of performance. Part of the confusion is due to the use of average efficiency by some manufacturers in their promotions and the guaranteed minimum efficiency used by others. Customers are often asked which efficiency rating they want. Dynamometers which are out of calibration further confuse efficiency standards, along with a lack of consensus on the desirable trade-off between efficiency and power factor. Motors of seven manufacturers are compared for horsepower, speed, efficiency, power factor, and list price.
