Problems encountered in making accurate measurements of acid precipitation are described and events recorded by Multistate Atmospheric Power Production Pollution Study (MAP3S) stations are presented. Sufficient information is available on emissions of sulfur and nitrogen compounds as well as wet deposition of nitrate and sulfate ions; however, the establishment of a source-receptor relationship is difficult. Classical meteorology, coupled with classical knowledge of air pollution and air chemistry, cannot yet identify the mechanisms and transformations at work. National Atmospheric Deposition Program and MAP3S data are presented in 11 figures. (JMT)
