Investment risk assessment of the HTGR steam cycle/cogeneration plant

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/6428127· OSTI ID:6428127
A probabilistic investment risk assessment has been performed on the Baseline 0 design of the 2240 MW(t) steam cycle cogeneration (SC/C) high-temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR). The assessment shows that this plant can provide a high degree of assurance against extended plant outages and costly damage to accidents. The assessment had also been compared to the investment protection goals recently developed for the HTGR and reflecting a strong aversion to long outage times. This comparison shows that, for the vast majority of the broad spectrum of events considered, the 2240 MW(t) SC/C HTGR meets these goals with varying degrees of margin. Furthermore, in those few, very low frequency events in which the goals are not met due to extended interruptions in core cooling, the assessment provides explicit guidance for improvements which can contribute to meeting the goals.
