A study of the geology of the San Juan Basin of the Colorado Plateau in New Mexico and Colorado was presented. The Age and Formation in which petroleum and natural gas deposits were found were determined by using several examples. The majority of the gas occurred in the Upper Cretaceous Age with small amounts in the Pennsylvanian, Mississippian, and Devonian Age strata. The majority of the oil was found in the Cretaceous Age rock, with smaller amounts in the Devonian, Pennsylvanian, and Jurassic Age rock.
