Properties of argon-ethane/methane mixtures for use in proportional counters

Properties of argon/ethane and argon/methane mixtures for use in proportional counters have been investigated. Multiplication and resolution are reported as a function of gas mixture and pressure for x-rays and charged particles. It is found that filtered industrial natural gas can be used as a substitute for pure methane gas in the operation of proportional counters.
