The use of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) in the installation of tension leg platforms (TLPs) in the North Sea Hutton Field is discussed. The installation of the platform's four seabed-located foundation templates was successfully completed in 1983 using a Sovardyne underwater acoustic positioning system. The successful use of ROVs during the TLP installation demonstrated their versatility and capacity and that they can be used to provide very large savings in time.
