Title: Enriched isotope applications: biomedical field. [New stable isotopes for clinical use and use in beomedical research]

The recognized need for high purity radionuclides and the need for organ specific radiopharmaceuticals will stimulate the demand for large quantities of stable isotopes. Stable isotopes currently under investigation for use as targets for radionuclide production include: /sup 95/ /sup 98/ /sup 100/Mo, /sup 203/ /sup 205/Tl, /sup 201/Hg, /sup 66/ /sup 67/Zn, /sup 122/ /sup 123/Te, /sup 112/Sn, /sup 111/ /sup 112/Cd, /sup 50/Cr, /sup 50/V, /sup 82/Kr, /sup 197/Au, /sup 72/ /sup 74/Ge, /sup 54/ /sup 58/Fe, /sup 63/Cu, /sup 64/Ni, /sup 69/Ga, /sup 43/ /sup 46/Ca, /sup 41/K, /sup 35/Cl, /sup 23/Na, /sup 81/Br, /sup 84/Sr, /sup 85/Rb, /sup 75/As, /sup 76/Se, /sup 81/Br, /sup 31/P, /sup 29/Si, /sup 156/Dy, /sup 152/Sm, /sup 170/Er, /sup 175/Lu, /sup 178/Lu, /sup 168/Yb, /sup 11/B, /sup 14/N, /sup 16/O, /sup 20/Ne, and /sup 124/Xe. As isotope production and radiopharmaceutical preparation costs are lowered and FDA approvals are secured, increased demand could develop for most of the stable isotopes listed. Requirements appear to be increasing for isotopes of those elements which are considered biologically essential (currently 25 elements) or for those which have an effect on the life processes. Demand is currently developing for the isotopes of the elements; K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, and Cr. High isotope costs, however, and the scarcity of some metal isotopes have severely limited biomedical research programs. (ERB)
