We examine a simple model of anharmonic phonons with application to the superconducting isotope effect. Linear and quadratic electron-phonon coupling are considered for various model potentials. The results of the model calculations are compared with the high-temperature superconductors La[sub 2[minus][ital x]]Sr[sub [ital x]]CuO[sub 4], Y[sub 1[minus][ital x]]Pr[sub [ital x]]Ba[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7[minus][delta]], and YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3[minus][ital x]M[ital x]]O[sub 7[minus][delta]] with [ital M]=Zn, Ni, or Fe.
