Reduction of copper(II) complexes by amines (in Russian)

Copper(II) complexes act as reversible oxidants in the oxidative carbonylation of amines. At the same time, they may undergo intrasphere redox cleavage with reduction to copper(I) and simultaneous oxidation of the amine. Both reactions proceed under the same conditions; this lowers the yield of the required carbonyl compounds and may distort the kinetic picture of the main reaction. The authors therefore studied the kinetics of the second reaction and analyzed its influence on the carbonylation of amines. The course of the reaction was monitored by determination of the variation in the optical density of the solution with the aid of a photocolorimeter. The goal of the investigation was to bring the kinetics of the two reactions into balance and therefore optimize the carbonylation yield.
