The heavily reddened star HD 29647 (V = 8/sup m/.4) is investigated using spectrograms of 9- and 28-A/mm dispersion taken with the 6-m telescope as well as photometry in the seven-color Vilnius system. The hydrogen lines and the Balmer discontinuity yield T/sub e/ = 15 600 /sup 0/K (corresponding to spectral type B5) and log g = 3.70. HD 29647 is a peculiar Hg--Mn star. Its radial velocity of +14.1 +- 1.0 km/sec nearly coincides with that of the Taurus dark cloud and the embedded T Tau variables. If the star is at 165-pc distance near the front edge of the dark cloud and has E/sub B/-V = 1.06, its visual absolute magnitude would be -0/sup m/.9. On the basis of the photometry, trace variability may possibly exist in the short-wavelength U,P,X bands.
