Estimation of the public health risk from exposure to gasoline vapor via the gasoline marketing system

Book ·
OSTI ID:6422797
An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) analysis of gasoline marketing will determine whether the emissions of gasoline vapor or specific constituent of gasoline vapor warrant control to protect public health. The analysis also evaluates available control options and their impacts. This report reviews the background of the gasoline marketing industry, the regulatory history of emission standards, and the decisions facing the EPA. The assessment estimates cancer risks for vapors and three gasoline components: benzene, ethylene dibromide, and ethylene dicholoride for nearby residents and for those refueling their vehicles at self-service stations. Preliminary results show gasoline vapor risks due to inhalation predominating. The report concludes by suggesting that the Science Advisory Board review the quality of evidence and the quantitative risk assessment. 50 references, 6 figures, 49 tables.
