Protecting the California desert

A mandated review of California's desert areas for classification as wilderness must be ready in 1980 in order to prepare a master plan for desert use and protection. Other states have a 1991 deadline and will be affected by the success or failure of the California review of roadless areas. Specific criteria listed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) include an absence of regularly used and maintained roads, a minimum of 5000 acres, no noticeable human development, and a site that is suitable for solitude and primitive recreation. Conservations are urged to monitor and respond to the draft inventory to be sure it includes all eligible land because, while some will be dropped from the list, no new areas can be added.
