Theoretical profiles of density, temperature, drift velocity, and electric field are calculated for the sheath region between the plasma and first wall of a tokamak fusion reactor. It is shown that gyro-orbit effects on charged particle diffusion across the magnetic field create a sheath potential of 6 e/phi/sub k/T/sub e/ that strongly repels ions. This effect becomes important in the evaluation of sputtering and secondary electron emission at the first wall due to ion bombardment.
