The compound Cu{sub 2}Th{sub 4}(MoO{sub 4}) is cubic, space group I{bar 4}3d, with a = 14.477(7) {angstrom} and Z = 4. Its crystal structure has been determined from single crystal data by X-ray diffraction: Th(MoO{sub 4}) units are constituted by a ThO{sub 9} polyhedron sharing corners with MoO{sub 4} tetrahedra. The 3D framework delimits 12 cages per unit cell, two-thirds of which are occupied by Cu{sup I} isolated atoms, in agreement with EXAFS results. A crystal chemistry study has been performed: isomorphous cationic substitutions involving small, monovalent cations (Li{sup +}, Cu{sup +}) are possible, leading to isotypic compounds with empty or partially occupied cages. Structural refinement of the isotypic compound La{sub 4}(MoO{sub 4}){sub 3}(ReO{sub 4}){sub 6} by the Rietveld method confirms the existence of empty cages and thus the relative stability of this new structural skeleton.
