Layered vanadyl phosphate, VOPO{sub 4}{center_dot}2H{sub 2}O, is well known for its catalytic activity. A magnetic study has been carried out on the transition metal intercalated vanadyl phosphates M(VOPO{sub 4}){sub 2}{center_dot}4H{sub 2}O (M = Co{sup 2+}, Ni{sup 2+}), which contain linear trimers of V{double_bond}O{single_bond}M{single_bond}O{double_bond}V between the layers. Ferromagnetic interactions have been found to be mediated through these linear trimers.
