A two-stroke internal combustion engine is described comprising a cylinder, oblong in cross section with a major cross-sectional axis and a minor cross-sectional axis; intake porting in the cylinder; exhaust porting in the cylinder, the intake porting and the exhaust porting being centered at the minor axis and opposed in the cylinder; scavenging porting extending in the cylinder from adjacent the intake porting to adjacent the exhaust porting and including two sets of at least three scavenging ports each, and the sets being opposed in the cylinder.
