Water-dimethylformamide solutions of lanthanum nitrate, lanthanum chloride, and lanthanum perchlorate have been investigated by /sup 139/La NMR as a function of the mole fraction (X) of the organic solvent and the nature of the anion. The /sup 139/La NMR spectra are characterized by a single signal, whose chemical shift and width depend both on the mole fraction of DMFA and on the nature of the anion. It has been shown that in solutions of lanthanum nitrate in the range of values 0 < X less than or equal to 1 nitrate ions are located both in the outer sphere and in the inner sphere (when X > 0.14) of lanthanum(III), forming (La(DMFA)x(NO/sub 3/)y)/sup (3-y)+/ particles. In solutions with a high content of DMFA (1 greater than or equal to X greater than or equal to 0.7) the composition of the coordination sphere of lanthanum(III) is constant, and the principal fragment in these solutions is the complex (La(DMFA)/sub 5/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/)/sup +/)/sup +/. In chloride solutions containing small amounts of DMFA (0 < X less than or equal to 0.3) Cl/sup -/ anions are found only in the outer sphere of lanthanum(III). In solutions which are more concentrated with respect to DMFA chloride ions enter the inner coordination sphere of La/sup 3 +/ to form chloride complexes. It has been established that in La(ClO/sub 4/)/sub 3/-H/sub 2/O-DMFA solutions the perchlorate anions do not enter the inner sphere of the La/sup 3 +/ anions and that the cations are preferentially solvated by dimethylformamide at all values of X > 0.
