Nonequilibrium molecular hydrogen generation by fuel rich hydrocarbon/air flames

Journal Article · · Combust. Flame; (United States)
Attention is called to the discrepancy between recent results on subequilibrium hydrogen yields (Ryason, 1977 Lewis, 1981) and earlier studies that measured hydrogen in equilibrium quantities (Markstein, 1959 Kydd, 1959). Data are presented which reveal how flame temperature (nonadiabaticity) and pressure affect H2 yields and how these parameters can be used to make fuel rich hydrocarbon/air flames overshoot their equilibrium hydrogen yields. It is found that fuel rich hydrocarbon/air flames can produce superequilibrium yields of H2 if they are burned under near-adiabatic subatmospheric conditions. 16 references.
