Current developments in solar energy

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6418987
A survey covers the better payoff for solar heating in northern U.S. rather than southern U.S. because the long heating season is better able to pay the high fixed cost; water heating, the most economically justified solar application at present; solar heating and cooling of buildings waiting on equipment development and higher fossil-fuel prices; solar thermal electric generation available only in small-scale units; promising developments occurring in photovoltaic cells; wide use of solar water heaters in Israel and in Japan, with different types of equipment; and the limited outlook for solar energy in the U.S. vs. conventional energy sources, including the relatively small proportion of research funds budgeted by ERDA for solar research.
