Phase-slip dynamics and excess current in long superconducting bridges

Dynamic two-fluid equations are formulated which describe the nonlinear penetration of a longitudinal electric field into a superconductor. Some properties of phase-slip centers in long channels are examined. The occurrence of a phase-slip center, localized in the center of a superconducting bridge which leads to the jump condition in the hysteretic current--phase relation I(phi), is analyzed in detail. The dependence of the excess current on the bridge length is analyzed. For limitingly long lengths (which are, nevertheless, small in comparison with the penetration depth) the excess current is 5/8 of the critical current.
