Equivalent nonlinear foundation method for pile-founded structures

Conference · · Proc., Annu. Offshore Technol. Conf.; (United States)

An equivalent foundation method was developed to model the nonlinear response of piles subjected to pile head shear, moment and axial load. This equivalent method uses only two pile elements to represent the axial and flexural resistance of a pile which normally needs a complex system of pile-soil elements to model. Each of the equivalent elements has a multi-linear force-displacement relationship and an appropriate hysteretic behavior that retains the static, cyclic and dynamic behavior of a more complex model. This method has been applied to some typical pile-founded offshore structures for both static and dynamic analysis. The comparison between the responses obtained from this method and from the well known nonlinear Winkler model showed that both solutions agreed extremely well. More important, the equivalent method has just about one-tenth of the number of degrees of freedom normally needed in a Winkler model. This study concludes that the equivalent nonlinear foundation model is an accurate and economical technique to represent the nonlinear behavior of pile foundations. The reduction in computer cost and storage by this nonlinear foundation modeling technique is significant.
