In reforming natural gas to produce ammonia or hydrogen, du Pont has improved the catalyst-tube life and plant utility by adding hydrogen to the steam-natural gas mixture fed to the reformer. Continuous addition (at 0.5 to 10% by volume, based on natural gas) of hydrogen to this mixture prevents the formation of hot spots on the tubes containing the nickel catalyst. The added hydrogen reacts with nickel oxide in the catalyst to reduce it to nickel, the active form of the catalyst. No changes are required in the conventional steam-to-carbon ratio or other operating conditions.
