Repowering hydro: The renewable energy technology for the 21st century

Hydro Review formed a steering committee to assist in planning, organizing, and carrying out the North American Hydroelectric Research Development Forum held in Kansas City in late February 1992. Members of the steering committee represented investor-owned utility, federal hydropower producer, and university research interests. The steering committee developed a mission for the forum, which included six objectives: (1) review ongoing and planned research efforts in the hydro industry; (2) identify new research areas and specific issues/topics to be addressed in the future; (3) suggest areas of emphasis for new research needs; (4) identify agencies that can support or undertake new research needs; (5) disseminate a report with information/recommendations generated at the forum; and (6) define future steps/follow-up actions. The Forum attempted to bring all segments of the North American hydroelectric industry together to develop comprehensive, prioritized recommendations for hydro research and development. The scope of the forum was comprehensive, regarding hydropower-related issues with the exception of the topic of dam safety, which was addressed at a previously held meeting specifically to identify dam safety research needs. In all, forum participants identified approximately 240 research ideas. A detailed discussion of all research ideas is provided in the titled Research Recommendations.
