This work is devoted to the investigation by PMR of complex formation of three monovalent polydentate ligands with terminal phosphinylphenyl groups, L/sup I/-L/sub III/, and the phosphoryl-containing crown ether, L/sup IV/, with lithium 2,4-dinitrophenolate, LiDNP, and europium heptafluorodimethyloctanedionate, Eu(fod)/sub 3/, in order to establish the coordination sites in the ligands. In the phosphorus-containing polydentate ligands, complex formation with the lithium ion occurs mainly via the oxygen atoms of the phosphoryl groups. In the case of the phosphorus-containing macrocycle, the ether oxygen atoms also appear to participate in the coordination. On formation of a complex with Eu(fod)/sub 3/, not only the phosphoryl groups but also the central ether oxygen atom of the phosphorus-containing macrocycle or polydentate ligand participate in the coordination.
