One-electron reduction product of Tris (2,2'-bipyridine)rhodium (III)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6416834
The physical and chemical properties of Rh(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ generated via flash-photolytic and pulse-radiolytic methods in aqueous solutions are reported and discussed. The reduction potential (about -0.86 V vs SHE) and electron-exchange rate (> = 10/sup 9/ M/sup -1/ s/sup -1/) for the Rh(bpy)/sub 3//sup 3 +//Rh(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ couple suggest the formulation of Rh(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ as the ligand-localized radical (Rh/sup III/(bpy)/sub 2/(bpy/sup -/))/sup 2 +/. By contrast, the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum, disproportionation chemistry, and the substitution lability of the metal center require that Rh(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ have substantial metal-centered radical (4d/sup 7/ Rh(II)) character.
