A gasohol test program was started August 1, 1979, by Contra Costa County and continued for over three years. A total of 30 county pool cars was on test--15 which accumulated on average about 42,000 miles on gasohol and 15 similar cars which ran on gasoline as a control group. During the 3-1/3 years of testing, no operability problems were encountered that were attributable to the use of gasohol. Gasohol showed no different effect on elastomer parts than gasoline. Analysis of 20 months of fueling records showed that the fuel economy of the gasohol cars was about 4.5% poorer than that of the gasoline cars which is about the difference in fuel energy content. Inspection of carburetors showed more throttle body and venturi area deposits for gasohol when no effective additive treatment was used. In some cases there was carburetor corrosion when using gasohol. Deposits in the tanks were different for the two types of fuel; however, the terneplate in all fuel tanks appeared intact.
