South Keg Coulee Field, Musselshell County, montana

Journal Article · · Mt. Geol.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6415462
The S. Keg Coulee oil field, located in Musselshell County in central Montana, was discovered in January 1964. Production was found in the basal sandstone (''C'' Sand) of the lower Tyler Formation (Mississippian) at a depth of 4,725 ft. Nine additional producing wells have been drilled to date. The field is a stratigraphic trap on a S. dipping structural nose; the reservoir was formed by deposition of sandstone in a river channel. Structure is important only in establishing the position of the oil-water contact at the S. end of the field. Cumulative oil production through 1966 is more than 450,000 barrels and the ultimate yield from both primary and secondary oil is expected to be more than 2,000,000 barrels.
