Land reclamation technology being applied to stripmined lands in Iowa and Illinois is surveyed. In Iowa, spoil banks are leveled and seeded with various types of grasses. Mined lands are restored to their original levels of agricultural productivity through the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer. Row cropping experiments in Illinois demonstrate the value of this technique in controlling soil erosion and in enhancing crop productivity.
