Incorporation of added ethene into the propene fraction formed by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction over cobalt supported on Al metal has been studied. Either the CO or the C{sub 2}H{sub 4} in the feed gas was labeled with {sup 13}C, and the products were studied by {sup 13}C NMR spectroscopy. All of the propene isotopomers which contain the {sup 13}C label could be identified. The formation of products which contain a single-labeled atom from the (doubly labeled) ethene feed was observed; this required that some of the ethene dissociate to C{sub 1} fragments. Among doubly labeled propenes, there was a strong preference for those isotopomers with the labels on adjacent carbon atoms. This could best be accounted for by a model which assumes that some ethene incorporation occurs as a C{sub 2} unit. The spectra gave no evidence that two C{sub 1} units, one from CO and one from ethene, recombine to give C{sub 2}H{sub 4} in the product mixture.
