Three-dimensional hexagonal-z difference scheme for discrete-ordinates codes

A new linear, continuous, differencing scheme is developed for equilateral triangular right prismatic mesh cells. The scheme, designated DITRI3, can be used in solving the discrete ordinates form of the neutral particle transport equation for the hexagonal-z geometrical arrangement frequently found in nuclear reactor cores. The new scheme requires the solution of only one equation per prismatic cell, and the storage of only one quantity per cell from one outer iteration to another. Several problems are analyzed with THREETRAN (hex,z), a three-dimensional discrete ordinates code which uses the DITRI3 scheme. The results are compared with those obtained with the two-dimensional triangular mesh discrete-ordinates code TRIDENT, and the three-dimensional diffusion code DIF3D.
