Mobilization of residual oil under equilibrium and nonequilibrium conditions
A microvisual study of residual oil mobilization was conducted using a simple chemical system consisting of water n-propanol, and cyclohexane. The purpose of this work was to investigate the displacement of individual trapped oil globules under both equilibrium and nonequilibrium conditions to establish the importance of nonequilibrium effects. It is shown that the mobilization of residual oil under nonequilibrium conditions requires a smaller capillary number than when the fluids are at chemical equilibrium. The difference between the equilibrium and nonequilibrium cappilary number increases as the intensity of the interfacial turbulence due to the Mazangoni effect is enhanced. Large increases in globule volume (swelling) of greater than 15% reduce the capillary number required for mobilization. Thus highly swollen drops are easier to displace. 19 refs.
