Sol-Gel coatings on continuous ceramic fibers

Conference · · Ceramic Engineering and Science Proceedings; (USA)
OSTI ID:6412032
A technique for coating continuous fibers and fiber tows with oxide layers using sols is presented. AVCO SiC SCS-0 fibers were continuously coated with an alumina sol at 95 cm/s to 0.5 cm/s and heat-treated at temperatures between 100 and 1300 C. Different sol concentrations with alumina yields of 8, 23, 38, and 118 g/l were used. The coated fibers were characterized by optical microscopy in reflected light. Coating thickness and uniformity were measured as a function of coating speed, heat-treatment temperature, and sol concentration. Coating thickness became nonuniform at coating rates greater than 0.5 m/s when sols with alumina yields higher than 100 g/l were used. Other properties of the coating, such as pore size and volume fraction were much more sensitive to cooling rate and temperature. Multifilament tows of Du Pont fibers FP and PRD-166 were also coated with alumina sol. Extensive bridging of coating between filaments was observed, and filaments in the tow were often cemented together. 8 refs.
