This paper analyzes six methods for power factor correction in nonsinusoidal systems. The conventional methods based on shunt capacitance and LC tuned filters are compared with techniques relying on the use of solid-state compensators or active filters. It is proved that the best strategy, which minimizes voltage distortion, power system losses and the interference to communication systems, is not necessarily obtained when the power factor is unity.
