When the Exxon Valdez grounded in Alaska's Prince William Sound in March 1989, it released 10 million gallons of oil-the largest oil spill in U.S. history. How much will the federal government have to spend to clean up the Exxon Valdez spill GAO's ongoing work is examining the costs federal agencies estimate they have incurred, whether the agencies had procedures to seek reimbursement from Exxon, and the extent to which these agencies have been reimbursed. This report focuses on estimated costs reported by federal agencies as of September 30, 1989, and reimbursements received through November 15, 1989.
