Facility upgrading: capacity gains at minimal cost
Six years ago, Southern California Edison Company (SCE) embarked on a program aimed at upgrading its hydroelectric plants which, at that time, contributed approximately 875 MW to the company's total generating capacity. Edison's hydropower system consisted of 36 plants and 83 Francis and impulse-type generating units. Many of these were old and ranged widely in size, but there were a larger number of Francis turbines. SCE began upgrading the largest of these, located in the Big Creek area. The results were marked. Upgrading eight hydro turbines increased the system's capacity over 46 MW at an installed cost of $85/kW, and has resulted in an increased annual energy production of 120 million kWh. 2 figures, 1 table.
