Genetic control of sulfur dioxide and ozone tolerance in eastern white pine

Journal Article · · For. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6406321
Clonal repeatability analyses were performed to obtain an estimate of the upper limit of genetic control for tolerance of Pinus strobus to sulfur dioxide and ozone. Tolerant and sensitive clones were fumigated for six hours with a mixture of 2.5 parts per hundred million (pphm) sulfur dioxide and 5 pphm ozone. Response was judged by needle elongation and two indices of direct needle damage. Repeatability estimates based on needle elongation values averaged 0.511; those derived from indices of direct needle damage average 0.799 and 0.818.
