A new North Sea record for steel structures will be established this spring when the 40,000-ton Magnus jacket is installed in BP's Magnus field. The structure will stand in 186-m (612-ft) water in Block 211/12, located 125 miles northeast of Shetland in what will be the deepest and most northerly field yet to be developed in European waters. The jacket, constructed by Highlands Fabricators at its Nigg Bay yard in Scotland, is designed to withstand 100-ft waves and 100-mph winds. The structure is scheduled to be floated to location in the horizontal position, up-ended and secured to the seabed via 36,350-ton piles- nine in each of the four legs- driven 300 ft into the seabed and grouted in place.
