Horizontal well proves productivity advantages

This paper outlines the horizontal drilling research and development project run by Elf-Aquitaine and Institut Francais du Petrole (IFP). The project was to develop reservoir engineering and drilling technology to improve hydrocarbon recovery and productivity of typical reservoirs by means of long horizontal hole sections. It was confirmed that drilling a horizontal hole in a reservoir is feasible even at 10,000-ft depth. The program has reached most of its objectives: four wells were successfully drilled and cored in a reasonable amount of time and are still producing; the cost of these wells is two to three times the cost of a comparable verticle well; conventional logging and perforating tools can be run in a highly deviated and horizontal open hole; water-free productivity of the highly fractured Rospo Mare 6 well is about 20 times better than that of the surrounding wells; and water-free productivity of the CLU 110 well, without any stimulation and after five months, is still more than three times that of the other wells in the field.
