Selective synthesis of hydrocarbons from syngas using nickel/ZSM-5 catalysts

Hydrogenation of CO to hydrocarbons was studied by using nickel catalysts on different supports. These catalysts were tested alone as well as combined with zeolite ZSM-5 in a microreactor at atmospheric pressure. The nickel/zirconia catalyst is found to be considerably more active and selective to higher hydrocarbons compared to other nickel catalysts on conventional supports. When combined with ZSM-5, the nickel/zirconia catalyst gives the product distribution, which is rich in gasoline-range hydrocarbons and aromatics. The nickel catalysts were characterized by temperature-programmed reduction and hydrogen chemisorption. The role of zirconia as a promoter for hydrocarbon synthesis has been discussed.
