Adenosine triphosphate to total adenylate status of ozonated pinto bean foliage and its relation to photosynthesis and respiration

Pinto bean plants were exposed to 0.25-0.30 ppm ozone for 3 hours. Ozone toxicity symptoms began to develop within 21 hours, becoming prominent in all samples within 72 hours. The ATP content of ozonated leaves was significantly higher than that of controls at 0, 6, and 72 hours but not at 21 hours. The increase in total adenylates in leaves observed immediately after ozonation persisted through the 21 hour period. The ratio of ATP to total adenylate content was not affected by exposure to ozone. Respiration increased significantly in ozonated leaves; the increase became greater as the symptoms developed. The decrease in photosynthesis observed immediately after ozonation persisted for 6 hours but photosynthesis returned to normal by 21 hours.
