Gas-phase synthesis of 4-hydroxy-2-butanone by dehydrogenation of 1, 3-butanediol

The authors studied a new method for the production of 4-hydroxy2-butanone by catalytic dehydrogenation of 1,3-butanediol, in order to find the best synthesis conditions. They therefore studied a series of heterogeneous catalysts, among which copper-containing catalysts had the highest activity. The study shows that 4-hydroxy2-butanone containing about 1.5 mass % of ketones of various structures as by-products can be synthesized with up to 90% selectivity by dehydrogenation of 1,3-butanediol under atmospheric pressure at 120 and gaseous feed space velocity of 1.0 h .
