Patent ·
OSTI ID:6403057

This patent describes an uncooled engine that comprises a coast iron cylindrical block having a bore therein, a cast iron cylinder head having an inside surface facing the bore whereby the bore and the head surface cooperatively form a combustion chamber, the cylinder head having an air intake passage and an exhaust passage communicating with the head surface; poppet valves on the head for opening and closing the respective passages, each poppet valve having an end surface thereof exposed to the combustion chamber, and a piston having, at the end nearer to the head surface, a cast iron end wall; the improvement wherein the bore includes a largest diameter bore section nearest the cylinder head, an intermediate bore section surrounding the combustion chamber, a shoulder between the largest diameter bore section and the intermediate bore section and a smallest diameter bore section furthest from the cylinder head, the largest diameter bore section and the intermediate bore section only having adhered thereto a first insulative coating; there being a first heat resistant layer for covering the first insulative coating comprised of a cylinder extending through the bore for slideable retaining the piston, the cylinder being in direct contact with and closely fit within the smallest diameter bore section and having an annular flange engaging the shoulder of the bore.
