Amine extraction: spectrographic determination of tantalum in plutonium

An emission spectrographic method for the determination of microgram amounts of tantalum in plutonium is described. The plutonium is dissolved in hydrochloric acid and extracted into tri-n-oxtylamine (TNOA) before tantalum dissolution is even tried. Once the plutonium is removed, hydrofluoric acid is added to dissolve the tantalum and the aqueous phase analyzed spectrographically for tantalum using niobium as the internal standard. Concentrations of tantalum as low as 20 ppM in 100 mg. of plutonium can be determined.
