Underground gas storage exempt from EPA regulations

The U.S. Congress has exempted underground storage of natural gas from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations governing underground injection wells and has amended the Safe Drinking Water Act to exempt states with adequate injection control rules from complying with redundant EPA rules. The amendments allow states three more years, from 1/1/81, to issue exemptions to EPA safe drinking-water standards. If states do no implement and enforce safe drinking-water standards, EPA will take over the responsibility. Most of the 32 states regulating underground injection are assuming that their programs will be acceptable to EPA.
